Greetings and welcome to the Descendants of Freedmen Association conference website!Plans are underway for the Descendants 5th annual conference. The 2008 conference will be held at Langston University (Oklahoma City campus) on June 7, 2008. The 2008 conference will feature lecturers, authors, attorneys and genealogist.

The purpose of this website is to keep you informed of future activities and to get you involved in the movement, as it requires the efforts of all the Descendants of Freedmen as well as its supporters, families and friends

This conference supports the primary goal of this Black Indian organization, which is to enhance public awareness of Black Indian Freedmen and Native American cultures by educating our members, supporters, and the general public regarding the history and cultures of the two groups. It is our desire that the rich cultural heritage of the Freedmen be recognized and represented in our historical museums as well as our elementary, high school and college textbooks.

The Association is a nonprofit 501(c) 4 corporation based in Oklahoma City. It’s members are of mixed Black and Native American Indian heritage and are descendants of ancestors designated as Freedmen by the Dawes Commission in the late 1800’s.

Once again, we have secured scholarly speakers and presenters, and we are confident that each attendee will enjoy a quality educational conference! It is our desire that this conference will inspire the old, and challenge the young.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our esteemed speakers and presenters for taking an active role in the Descendants of Freedmen’s quest for justice and equality in the 21 century. Many of these great speakers have studied this subject for many years and have dedicated their time and money for the sake of historical preservation of a denied people.

On behalf of the board of directors and Descendants of Freedmen Association, we thank you for your participation!

Yours in the Plight,

Conference Chairperson
